Phuket Hotel Review
During our tour of Thailand and Malaysia, we stayed in a lot of different hotels. So, I want to share my review of the Sugar Marina Resort hotel which I think is a good choice for where to stay in Phuket.
Firstly, when deciding where to stay in Phuket you need to choose a resort. Of course, it depends on what you’re looking for. We wanted somewhere close to the beach, restaurants and shops but not too busy. Some of the Phuket resorts are well known for their lively nightlife but Karon Beach is a bit quieter. We found it ideal with plenty of facilities but not too busy.
The hotel is tucked away at the bottom of a side street and so it was quite peaceful there. On the other hand, our taxi driver from the ferry port couldn’t find it so we had to use our phones to look at the map for him. There are actually two Sugar Marina Hotels in Phuket apparently so that also caused confusion. Fortunately, there is a hotel sign at the bottom of the street which helped a lot.
Firstly, let’s talk about the bedroom. One of the reasons I chose this hotel as to where to stay in Phuket was because of the pool access rooms. We stayed in a pool access room in Langkawi too and they are a great idea. Usually, these type of rooms are quite pricey, but here they were excellent value, so that was another bonus.
The room was a reasonable size with two beds and an area by the door with hanging space and room for luggage. As you can see in the photo above, the large patio doors open directly onto the pool.
I liked the modern style of the room and this is particularly evident in the bathroom. It was very light because of the large windows which makes a nice change from dark bathrooms with no natural light. Don’t worry though, you can still shut out the bedroom for privacy when you need to.
Since it was very hot in Thailand while we visited, we loved having easy access to the pool. Our small balcony had two chairs and a small table so it was lovely to sit there to relax. To get into the pool you just open the safety gate and climb down a few steps.
Each room also had a large drying rack on the balcony which was handy for swing costumes and towels. It was real sun troap so things dried really quickly.
As you can see the pool was long and thin and stretched right along this side of the hotel. If you wanted to lie on a sunbed there were plenty available on the opposite side from the rooms. In the corner, you can see the children’s pool with slide.
As I said already, the hotel is modern and I guess quite new. One of the things I liked about it was the little art touches around the hotel. These small metal figures scaled the wall in our bedroom.
Then there was the clever do not disturb sign in the shape of a paint roller. So much more attractive than a cardboard sign.
This art display of chairs was in the entrance to our block of the hotel. They are small touches but they do lift the feel of the hotel and make it more interesting.
The hotel has a large restaurant which serves a buffet breakfast. This was included in our room rate and we were given vouchers at reception when we checked in. You show the voucher when you arrive at the restaurant. We found plenty of choice on the buffet with hot food and vegetables available as well as the usual pastries, toast, and fruit.
If you are looking for a comfortable hotel in a good location for visiting Karon Beach in Phuket then I hope this review will be useful. We enjoyed our stay at the Sugar Marina Resort and found it a good choice.
We arrived by ferry from Koh Lanta and it is easy to get a taxi shuttle transfer arranged to the resorts. If like us, you need to get to the airport afterwards then there is a public bus which stops near the hotel. So it’s quite convenient for public transport.
