Koh Lanta Hotel Review
The Thai island of Koh Lanta is quite small but there is plenty of accommodation options available. So, where to stay in Koh Lanta? I spent a lot of time reading reviews and looking at hotel photos before I booked so I want to share my thoughts on the hotel we stayed at.
I wanted a hotel that was reasonably close to the ferry port as we only stayed 3 nights. This was the end of our tour of Thailand and Malaysia. So we wanted somewhere nice to relax and chill for a few days before returning to Bangkok. My choice was the Lanta New Coconut Resort which is a small hotel on the west coast of the island.
Arriving on Koh Lanta
We arrived on the island by ferry from Koh Lipe so like any visitors our first glimpse of Koh Lanta was Saladan Pier. There’s not much there but the ferry company had arranged a free transfer to our hotel. It was an interesting journey in the back of an open truck but it wasn’t far to the hotel. I think it’s a good idea to arrange your transfer in advance as there were limited options on arrival. Our hotel arranged a songthaew to take us back to Saladan at the end of our stay which was more comfortable.
We took several ferries to get from island to island in Thailand and Malaysia. It’s a good way to travel and fairly efficient. The ferry terminals vary but on the smaller islands like Koh Lanta they are pretty much just a dock and a small building for check-in so don’t expect lots of facilities.
It’s always nice to get a warm welcome when you arrive at a new hotel especially after a day’s travel. So the smiling staff and cold drink as we arrived were perfect. Our room was close to the pool area and had this fabulous patio with hammock outside.
Inside, the room was spacious so plenty of room to unpack and sort through our things. You entered the room through the patio doors you can see behind the hammock. So the room had plenty of light and the air-conditioning worked well. We spent a comfortable 3 nights there.
Our room was actually a family room I think as it had an extra bed. Since the hotel wasn’t full we were upgraded at check-in. In fact, the hotel offers several different room types but they all look very nice. If you’re a small family then the room we had is ideal as it’s also close to the pool and other facilities.
As I said, we wanted to relax and chill for a few days so the pool and beach were a big factor in choosing this hotel. In fact, the pool is between the hotel and the beach. So you can sit on a sun lounger by the pool and look over the sea. Perfect!
Restaurant and Bar
When you just want to relax it’s nice if the hotel has a good restaurant and bar. It’s great to just wander down in the evening and get a drink. We enjoyed sitting in the bar looking out over the sea and we also ate breakfast and lunch here every day.
If you want to venture out of the hotel then there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bar within walking distance. In fact, it’s a great location because you feel really cut off but you’re not really. Just walk up to the main road and you’ll find lots of options.
During the day the bar and restaurant are open serving meals, snacks and drinks either at the tables or by the pool. The hotel also has a coffee shop which makes an excellent iced coffee.
On one night we even got a fire show on the beach. I think this is a weekly event. One of the staff did the fire show on the beach just outside the bar area. It was pretty impressive and my photo doesn’t do it justice. We didn’t expect it so it was a nice surprise and drew quite a few people to the bar area.
Just a quick mention of the excellent laundry service offered here. When deciding where to stay in Koh Lanta I looked for somewhere with a laundry facility as I knew we’d have loads of washing after several weeks travel. At Lanta New Coconut Resort you simply fill a large bag and leave it at reception. It was then returned the next day and the fees are very reasonable. I much prefer this over having to pay per item.
In Summary – Where to stay in Koh Lanta
We enjoyed our stat at Lanta New Coconut Resort and so I can recommend it as where to stay in Koh Lanta. If you are looking for a friendly, chilled resort where you can relax and enjoy the pool and beach then this is a good pick. You can check availability and prices via this link.
