We stayed at the Umaid Bhawan Heritage Hotel in Jaipur for 2 nights during our tour of Northern India and it is my opinion it is one of the best hotels in Jaipur. Yes, of course, there are more luxurious hotels and more expensive hotels but if you’re looking for a really great welcome, stunning heritage rooms and a quiet location close to local attractions then you should really look at the Umaid Bhawan Hotel. We paid around £50 a night including breakfast. Let me show you what you get for your money here.
Why do I think the Umaid Bhawan Hotel is one of the best hotels in Jaipur?
The Umaid Bhawan hotel is built and decorated in a traditional style. For me, that really added to its appeal. You really feel as though you are staying in India rather than a hotel which could be anywhere in the world. Plus, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to achieve this authentic experience. The Umaid Bhawan hotel was spotlessly clean. Our room was spacious and well equipped. The front desk was always available and very welcoming. They were also able to offer many extra services such as car hire and booking excursions.
The hotel has a pleasant swimming pool and a rooftop restaurant. It is located in a quiet residential area. Yet still a short taxi or autorickshaw ride to the main sights and the railway station. You get good quality free WiFi and if you choose to arrive by car there is plenty of parking outside.
We arrived in Jaipur hot and tired on a very delayed train from Agra. The Umaid Bhawan offers a free pick-up service from the railway station. Our driver was there waiting for us when we arrived despite the delay. What a relief to sink into the air-conditioned car. No need to worry about the usual hassles of finding a taxi at Indian railway stations. The hotel also offers a free pick-up service from Jaipur bus station.
We stayed in a suite which was particularly beautifully decorated. In fact, it felt like staying in a palace. They certainly pay attention to detail at Umaid Bhawan and it all adds to the overall experience. All the rooms are decorated slightly differently but all are air-conditioned with cable TV.
The bathroom was also spacious with a shower. Most importantly, it was kept very clean and good quality toiletries are also provided. Our suite also had a small balcony with chairs so you could sit outside to relax.
As can be seen above, our room had a desk in the alcove, a refrigerator with mini bar, kettle with tea and coffee sachets and complimentary bottles of water.
I especially loved the coloured windows and decorated ceilings. All these small details really add to the overall atmosphere. During the day, when the light flooded through the coloured window panes, you feel as though you are somewhere quite exotic.
Similarly, throughout the hotel, you will see little details in the decorations. It is almost a tourist attraction in itself.
Customer is excellent at the Umaid Bhawan Hotel and they offer a number of services to give their guests a great experience. Guests can rent bicycles to explore the surrounding area.
We chose to hire a car for half a day to visit the Amber Fort and the historic Pink City area. At under £10 for an air-conditioned car and driver, I think this provides superb value. I’m sure you can do it cheaper but not for the quality. Our driver spoke good English and was very flexible about what we wanted to see. Most importantly he didn’t try to take us to any shops or try to sell us anything.
The hotel can also help with currency exchange and ticket services if you need them and it has a small souvenir shop and business centre. We didn’t use any of those but it’s useful to know they are there if you need them.
The rooftop restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Breakfast was included in our room rate and we ate at the indoor buffet both mornings of our stay. The buffet had a great selection of foods. I love a breakfast buffet as you can try lots of different local foods but also get more recognisable staples such as toast and fruit. They also have excellent coffee. I can’t start the day without a good cup of black coffee and I wasn’t disappointed here.
We also ate in the restaurant in the evenings. When the weather is nice you can sit in the outdoor seating area which is lovely in the early evening. The hotel offers an extensive menu to choose from including Western and Indian dishes. Portions are large and very good value for money.
We found the location ideal. There is not a lot within walking distance but you can always get a taxi or autorickshaw from outside the hotel. There is a small supermarket nearby though and we walked there to buy water and supplies for our onward train journey to Mumbai. Although there is not a lot to see, the area is quite safe to walk around and we walked a little further to find some more small shops and a pharmacy. It is wonderful to be so close to all the main attraction and yet in such a peaceful part of the city. Peace and quiet are at a premium in India and we really appreciated the restful ambience at Umaid Bhawan Hotel.
As I’m sure you can tell, we loved the Umaid Bhawan Heritage Hotel in Jaipur. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that it’s one of the best hotels in Jaipur. It has such character and attention to detail. Moreover, for me, customer service is so important. I like to feel welcome but not hassled about anything. If I need something, I want someone to be available but otherwise, I like to be left alone. I think the Umaid Bhawan gets this totally right. As you walk by, they smile. They greet you as you enter the hotel and if you need them then they are always happy to help. If you stay at the Umaid Bhawan hotel while you’re in Jaipur please let me know whether you agree with me. Do you think it’s one of the best hotels in Jaipur?
