Where to Stay in Ottawa
During our tour of Canada, we stayed at the Business Inn in Ottawa for 3 nights. The hotel is located on McLaren Street and is within easy walking distance of the O-Train station and bus stops. We arrived on the bus from the airport and it’s around 10 minutes walk from Slater Street which is the nearest bus stop. The Canadian Parliament and other tourist attractions are actually within walking distance.
Nearby are plenty of shops and restaurants so if you don’t feel like cooking you don’t need to go far. I don’t think you can beat the location. The only downside during our stay was that the local council was digging up the road outside to lay utility pipes but it didn’t really inconvenience us at all.
If you are looking for a luxury hotel then the Business Inn & Suites Ottawa is probably not for you. However, if you want somewhere clean and spacious with all the room facilities you need for a few nights or longer then I think, like us, you’ll be comfortable here. For what you get, I think the Business Inn is great value for money.
We were welcomed by the staff at reception and this is a friendly hotel. I like it when the hotel staff make you feel as though they actually like working there and helping guests and you get this feeling at the Business Inn. You can tell they value their guests by the number of little extras that are available at the hotel.
Business Inn Ottawa: Hotel Facilities
Firstly, let me tell you a bit about the hotel generally. A help-yourself breakfast is available daily. I was impressed by the amount of choice on offer. Everything from hot breakfast sandwiches to cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurts, eggs, cereal bars. Also, as much coffee as you could drink and they even provided grab and go bags if you were in a hurry.
The Business Inn Ottawa also provides a free guest laundry facility. This was really handy for us as we had been travelling in Canada for over a week and I was able to get all our washing done. They even provide free washing detergent which is very unusual in my experience and much appreciated.
Apparently, there is also a fitness centre but I didn’t see that as I thought I was getting enough exercise walking everywhere. There is also parking available if you bring your car although there is a fee.
The first thing that struck me about our one-bedroom apartment was how large it was. Undoubtedly, this was the largest room we stayed in during our tour of Canada. As you entered the room you came into the large lounge, dining, kitchen area. As you can see in the photos, we had a very spacious sitting area with two large comfortable sofas to relax on.
A full kitchen is provided and although it is not in a separate room, you can pull the screen across if you want to. We didn’t bother as it’s handy to be able to use the fridge and counters. It’s rare to get a full oven and full-size fridge freezer in an aparthotel so this was a real bonus. We actually didn’t cook much while we were in Ottawa as there was a marvellous vegan restaurant just around the corner which we enjoyed eating at. However, if you were staying for longer this would be really useful. We did make good use of the fridge though. I was able to buy soy milk and vegan spread at the local shop and then take t down to breakfast which was really great.
The bedroom and bathroom were separated from the living areas by this long hallway. To the left are sliding doors to wardrobe space so if you were staying for more than a few days you could unpack all your things and put them away. When we’re touring we tend to live out of our suitcases as it never seems worth unpacking fully for just a day or two.
The bedroom was a good size and the bed was comfortable. The large screen TV was mounted on the wall which is ideal for watching TV in bed. Just a note about the TV in the apartment. There was a really good range of channels available here. So often hotels give you a very limited choice of things to watch on their tv systems but we thought it was very good here at the Business Inn. Now, I know nobody comes on holiday to watch TV but we all need a little downtime after all that walking. Another positive in my opinion was the USB charging points. So much easier than fiddling with plug adaptors and I’m pleased to see so many places providing these now.
Another positive for me was the decent sized bath in the bathroom. So many hotels have those shallow baths nowadays and I just think you might as well not bother and put in a shower so we all know where we stand. Here at the Business Inn, it was a proper sized bath which was deep enough to soak in and relax. Surprisingly, it was a jacuzzi-style bath with jets and I really didn’t expect that kind of luxury at a budget hotel.
If you like to cook then obviously you need somewhere to sit and eat and the apartment had this impressive dining area. You can dine overlooking the balcony and street outside. It’s a nice, light area although the view is a bit limited.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t use the balcony during our stay due to renovations so the doors were kept locked. It’s a shame as it’s nice to step outside for some fresh area but it was a minor inconvenience. It would be lovely in the summer though.
In the dining room photo, you might have caught a glimpse of a printer in the corner. This is just another little extra facility which the Business Inn provides. You also get a desktop PC in the room which made a change from browsing the internet on my iPhone and of course, free wifi throughout the room and hotel.
Summary of the Business Inn Ottawa
Overall, I would recommend the Business Inn, Ottawa for anyone looking for good value accommodation. As I said, it’s not a luxury hotel and some aspects of the room and hotel are a little well worn. If that would bother you then this probably isn’t the place for you. However, we found it clean and comfortable and also everything worked. Staff were always available and happy to help with any queries or issues. We couldn’t get the main TV to work when we arrived and someone responded within minutes to help us out. If (or should that be when) we return to Ottawa then we’ll definitely stay here again.
