I’m sure we all like the idea of being castaway on an exotic island – for a little while anyway! So I want to share this Koh Lipe Hotel review about the Castaway Resort on this small island in Thailand. If you’re looking for all mod cons then this may not be the hotel for you. However, if you’re looking for a fun beachside stay in a wooden hut overlooking the ocean then read on.
Castaway Resort Koh Lipe
This Koh Lipe hotel is located on Sunrise beach. The island has plenty of beaches to choose from but I think this one is lovely. The island is pretty small and you could realistically walk everywhere. However, it is hot and if you’re feeling lazy then you can find motorbike taxis to whizz you around. In fact, there are no cars on the island which adds to its castaway feel.
Our stay on Koh Lipe was very much about relaxing and just chilling on the beach. After all, we had been travelling around Thailand and Malaysia for 3 weeks when we arrived here and so we wanted some down time. Of course, if you want a more active stay then you’ll find plenty to do. You will find bars, restaurants and shops in the main walking street area.
Then you can always take part in some of the many watersports on offer or take a boat trip to neighbouring islands. If you’re at the Koh Lipe hotel on a Monday then you can also take part in the local trash cleanup project. Group on Pattaya beach at 10 am to be a trash hero. For more details check out their website.
However, I’m going to concentrate on the Koh Lipe hotel review here as that’s where we spent all our time.
We stayed in one of the Breezy Bungalow. Although it’s called a bungalow, it is, in fact, a two-storey wooden building. You can also stay in single-storey bungalows but I liked the idea of staying in a house on stilts. You can choose between beachfront, beach view or garden breezy bungalows.
We stayed in a beach view one which is slightly more expensive than the garden ones. I like the idea of seeing the sea while sitting on the deck. Actually, I would have stayed in a beachfront one even though they were quite a bit more but they were already sold out when I booked.
These Koh Lipe hotel bungalows do not have air conditioning. There is a nice breeze but we did find it a bit warm at night. If you can’t live without air-conditioning then I think the Koh Lipe Castaway Hotel now has some rooms with air-con also.
To give you some idea of the layout of the bungalow. When you enter through the downstairs door you walk straight into the bathroom and lobby area. The stairs are on one side going up to the bedroom.
I don’t have any photos of the bathroom unfortunately but it’s quite a spacious area. The shower is in the corner and do note that there is no hot water. Paul was a bit worried about this but actually, the water is ok. It’s not freezing cold but rather lukewarm because it is heated naturally. However, you can’t get a hot shower here. I think it all adds to the castaway charm of the place and it was so hot when we stayed a cool shower was rather nice.
Then to get up to the bedroom you have these wooden stairs. As you can see in the photos they are quite steep but there is a handrail. We found it fine but it’s something to be aware of if you struggle with stairs. The Koh Lipe hotel has family bungalows too but you would need to be careful with small children on the stairs.
The upstairs bedrooms are nicely laid out with large windows which open right up so you get a breeze through. A large mosquito net is provided over the bed to keep the bugs out. You can leave the windows open all night and get a lovely breeze through. However, it was very windy at night when we stayed so we shut them. Of course, this means it is hotter inside so I’m not sure what is best.
The furnishings are basic but attractive. There are no wardrobes but you have platforms to put luggage and clothes and also a few places to hand towels etc. You have electricity so you can charge small appliances like phones and cameras but there are no televisions. This is a place to chill and relax.
You also get a lockable chest in the corner of the bedroom where you can put any valuables. We don’t travel with many valuables but of course, everyone has a passport and some money etc so this was handy.
Restaurant and Bar
During our stay, we ate all our meals at the hotel restaurant. The bar and restaurant are right on the beach and have a great view while you eat. Meals were reasonably priced and very tasty. You’ll find a good range of veggie and vegan options.
Kick-off your shoes and take a seat. They ask you not to wear shoes in this area but in fact, we spent the entire stay without shoes on. It was such a short walk from our bungalow to the restaurant area. This is a great place to relax during the day or evening. Cold drinks are always available and you can also get free wifi. It was handy to keep in touch but this is quite a remote resort so the wifi isn’t always fast. Sometimes it’s quite nice to have some tech downtime though.
Stay at this Koh Lipe Hotel
We really enjoyed our stay at the Castaway Koh Lipe hotel. I will definitely book again if we are touring Thailand as it was such a great experience.
