When I looked for accommodation in Agra, I was keen to stay somewhere within walking distance of the Taj Mahal. After all, it is the main reason for visiting the area. I read a lot of reviews about hotels, guesthouses and hostels and finally, decided on the Coral Court Homestay. The reviews were all pretty positive and the location was ideal.

Before I get started, I’d like to note that I paid to stay the Coral Court and this review is purely my own experience. If you choose to stay there after you read this review and you book by clicking one of my links I may get a small commission. However, you will also get a wonderful place to stay.

Location

The homestay is located in a peaceful residential area just past the main Taj Mahal parking area. You can easily get a taxi or autorickshaw from the railway station and although the road is a bit bumpy, it’s quite accessible. You can walk to the Taj Mahal from here which is why I chose it. You’re already closer than anyone who drives and parks in the car park. If you really don’t want to walk then just hop in one of the many autorickshaws you’ll meet as you wander down.

Double Room

Our deluxe double room was spotlessly clean, compact but nicely decorated. The bathroom was small but very clean. We had a tv, kettle with tea and coffee sachets. Also, there is free wifi and the signal was good. The patio door opens onto a shared balcony area, which you can see in the photos below.

It’s not a private space however it is lovely to be able to go outside and the air in Agra is much clearer than in Delhi so it’s actually quite pleasant. This is actually their cheapest room grade. They do a King room, Super Deluxe and also a suite. We paid £32 a night and I think that is excellent value for such a comfortable room.

Fabulous Food

That rate also includes a freshly cooked breakfast in the communal dining area on the ground floor. We enjoyed a fabulous breakfast of chapatis, potato pancakes, dahl, toast, jam, fruit, juice and coffee. Extra portions were offered if you were still hungry but we weren’t.

In fact, the food here is worth talking about some more. We went on a food tour in the city on one night but on the other evening, we ate here at the homestay. For £4 per person, we enjoyed an amazing home-cooked meal. Chapatis, dahl, two kinds of vegetable curry and rice. Drinks were offered to purchase and we treated ourselves to a beer to wash it down. I can’t emphasise what tremendous value the food here was. It was really good quality food and, again, we could have had second helpings if we weren’t already very full from the generous portions. If you stay here, make sure to eat in the homestay at least once.

Roof Terrace

Another great feature of this homestay is the roof terrace. You can see the Taj Mahal from up here and it’s a nice place to sit with a drink or just admire the views. It was very quiet while we were there as during the day guests do tend to be out and about visiting the sights.

Laundry

We were about halfway through our tour of India when we stayed in Agra so it was great to be able to get our laundry done. For a very reasonable charge, I think £4 but I can’t actually remember, they washed, dried and folded pretty much everything we had with us that we weren’t wearing. It was all done by the next day too which was very handy as we were only staying 2 nights.

A Valued Guest

The homestay feels a bit like being a guest in someone’s house and they can’t do enough to help you. They arranged an autorickshaw to take us to the station at 5 am on our departure day and checked our train information for us. On the other hand, they didn’t push any services on you. They were always friendly, always available but quite happy if you just wanted to do your own thing.

In Summary

I can highly recommend the Coral Court Homestay. It’s a friendly, comfortable family-run guesthouse which, quite rightly, gets rave reviews from people who stay there.
